Soils drive convergence in the regulation of vascular tension in land plants

This study demonstrates that plant water uptake under drought conditions is primarily constrained by soil physical properties rather than plant traits. Using model-based analysis, the authors show that capillary forces in drying soils limit plants’ ability to extract water, offering a new explanation for the limited success of breeding drought-resistant crops and highlighting the importance of soil management for global agricultural resilience.
